The Carolina Panthers improved to 3-2 in dramatic fashion with a 16-13 victory over the division rival New Orleans Saints Sunday. Carolina won it on a 52-yard field goal by kicker John Kasay as time expired. Head coach John Fox improved to 6-0 versus the Saints in Louisiana. Carolina travels to Arizona next Sunday. Following a disheartening loss to Tampa Bay last week at home, the Panthers came together and held a team meeting last week. Facing an 0-3 Saints team that won the NFC South last year, the Panthers knew they had a tough game ahead of them. They were right. “It was a tribute to the players in this locker room,” said Fox, whose team was outgained 341 to 243 in total yardage and surrendered 23 first downs while picking up just 12. “The way that game went, they had plenty of opportunities to lay down their sword, but they never did. It was just a great team effort in all three phases. READ MORE |

Moorehead records a tackle and helps hold Falcon running backs to 91 yardsATLANTA -- The Carolina Panthers lost their starting quarterback and had trouble slowing Joey Harrington. Still, they managed to get out of Atlanta with a victory, largely because DeAngelo Hall lost his cool. The Falcons' Pro Bowl cornerback picked up three penalties for 67 yards on Carolina's tying drive, and David Carr came on in relief of Jake Delhomme to lead the Panthers to their final 10 points in a 27-20 victory Sunday. Harrington had his best day since taking over for Michael Vick, throwing for 361 yards and two touchdowns. Still, it wasn't enough to keep Atlanta (0-3) from its worst start since 1999, when the Falcons lost their first four after reaching the Super Bowl the previous season. "We played well offensively," Harrington said. "But we need to do more." DeShaun Foster rushed for 122 yards and scored a couple of TDs, which helped the Panthers (2-1) overcome the loss of Delhomme late in the third quarter. He came off after hurting his elbow on a previous possession, but doesn't think the injury is serious. READ MORE |

Kindal racks up 3 tackles and a sack in season opening winFor almost the entire preseason, the Carolina Panthers looked like a football team in trouble. “I know there were people out there thinking we wouldn’t win a game just because we lost three games in the preseason,’’ defensive tackle Kris Jenkins said. It all goes to show just how meaningless the preseason is. The team that didn’t look like much in exhibition games looked like a completely different one in the regular-season opener. But don’t get carried away. Reality might be somewhere in the middle. “We didn’t just win the Super Bowl,’’ Jenkins said. “We just won the first game.’’ Using the kind of offensive balance and defensive firepower that didn’t exist a year ago, the Panthers defeated the St. Louis Rams 27-13 at the RCA Dome. It was the first time the Panthers won their opener since 2003, their Super Bowl season. READ MORE |
